MercyMedical Center recently eliminated 15 positions at the facility including 13 licensed practical nurses. The reason given for the staff reduction was that the LPNs were "unable to provide the level of nursing care needed" that a registered nurse would be able to provide the facility's patients. As well, the Womack Army Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina has stated it will cut over 500 civilian jobs next year. Not all is doom and gloom in healthcare as a report published earlier this year by the Center for Health Workforce Studies states that a shortage of personnel is the biggest reason hospitals cannot find clinical lab techs. The report also estimates that a 9% increase in employment will occur between 2010 and 2020.
